掌握多门外语一直被认为是个人能力的重要部分。在协和教科融合课程部,我们选择了德语作为第二外语课程,不仅因为德语和英语本属同一语系:日耳曼语系,对于融合学子来说掌握起来更得心应手;同时作为欧洲最普遍的语种之一,德语在政治、经济、文学等方面也被广泛使用。
在初中阶段,我们的德语教学旨在让学生们能够掌握日常环境中所需的简单用语。我们在课堂上探索德语国家和社会的文化多样性和当地人民的生活。在德语老师的引导下,学生们会展开一系列的学习,例如实用语言的练习,基础语法应用、词汇积累等。
Mastering multiple foreign languages has always been considered an important part of personal ability. At SUIS JKEMW, German has been chosen as a second foreign language course, not only because both German and English are part of the same language roots: Germanic family, which means learning German should technically be easy for our students, but also because as one of the most spoken languages in Europe, it is widely used in politics, economy, and literature.
German curriculum at EMW aims to enable students to master the basic language skills. In class, we explore the cultural diversity of German-speaking countries and the lives of local people. Under the guidance of the German teachers, students learn about basic grammar and vocabulary, and practice how to use the language on a daily basis.

As part of their first unit of study for German, which covers introductions to the German language and culture in German-speaking countries, Grade 6 students learned some German idioms (phrases which occur specifically within a particular language or dialect and can be hard to translate literally into other languages). Grade 6 students were given the fun and engaging task of filming a video of themselves using some of these phrases. Being able to be creative with foreign languages can be one of the most motivating ways to learn, and it was a delight for students to showcase not just their linguistic curiosity but their skills in using multimedia to express themselves, too. The results are funny, charming, and the practice has led to the embedding of these idioms into their longer-term memory, which can be one of the challenges of foreign language learning. In Grade 7, the students were exploring school life. This consisted in reviewing subjects, speaking about their school and what subjects they like, dislike, and why. We also looked at school rules and ECAs in German. The kids were introduced to different cultural aspects of schools around the globe.
Their final project for this unit consisted in creating a poster about a school they chose. The options were a Waldkindergarten (a kindergarten that takes place in the forest) and a Floating School (as in Nigeria). The students had to design timetables for the school they picked, imagine how the facilities look like, what a regular school day for kids in those schools would be.

My Daily Routines on Venus

Grade 8 was busy learning about daily routines in the first few weeks of the semester. A text in their learning material introduces persons, robots and aliens living on Mars and their daily routines. As a small project to lighten up their learning experience, the kids were asked to imagine that they live on Venus. They had the choice of being either an astronaut, a Venusian or a robot.

From the students' homework, we are delighted to see that their creativity and imagination are effectively stimulated, and at the same time, language learning is also happening subconsciously.
As an important part of EMW, German curriculum not only lays a solid foundation for students’ second foreign language, but also provides them with an additional choice to enter the next stage of learning. Our German learning environment brings rich experiences to our students so that their imagination will be stimulated and they will be empowered to share their ideas and thoughts creatively in an intellectually challenging environment.
