Science Festival
Science Festival
What are the driving forces for gliders and water rockets?
What are resident birds and winter migrants?
How did life on earth evolve?
For children, the world of science is full of wonders. And their curiosity of exploring cannot be limited to indoors. Recently, our Primary School held a Science Festival, and the pupils enjoyed a series of interdisciplinary activities and outdoor excursions.click to watch the video It is human’s eternal desire to explore the sky and space. In order to encourage our pupils to get more interested in the aerospace industry, at this year’s science festival, we scheduled an Aeromodelling Day. The 2021 Science Festival officially started along with the successful launch of a water rocket. During the airmodelling performance, the pupils also watch the voyage of A380, X450 and X720. It was many children’s first time seeing planes flying by at such a short distance.
Later, the pupils also participated in a photography activity using the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV): all of the G1 kids formed a circle; G2 arranged themselves into the letters “GMTY” according to their different House names; pupils and teachers worked together and successfully formed the letters “SCBS”.
Led by the teachers, the pupils also made their own “SCBS C919” glider planes and learned about the technology of the vehicles. They also tested their planes by letting them fly. At the Science Festival, our pupils were also thrilled to have outdoor excursions. G3 pupils went to the Wishing Star Park and participated in the “Seed and Birds'' themed activity. Before the trip, the children had completed several tasks to enrich their background knowledge. They had finished readings on birds in Chinese class and searched and memorised the characteristics of bird beaks in ICT class. In Science class, the pupils also studied the eight migratory routes for birds and identified the ones that include Shanghai. After arriving at the park, our pupils started to search for the resident birds and winter migrants on the task sheet. Everyone was very excited when they found a long-tailed shrike. 3M’s Elsa Yang said: “the real one is so different from what I saw in online pictures! It has more yellow and brown feathers!”
G4 and G5 students went to the Haiwan Forest Park and enjoyed their journey of exploring paleontology and astronomy. They had studied about the formation of fossils. However, this excursion not only required our students to have scientific knowledge but also challenged their physical agility.
In the museum, the pupils listened to lectures on dinosaurs and space observation. During the orienteering, the children finished a variety of research tasks. It was a remarkable trip for the children. Timmy Du from 5C wrote in his essay: “I have a piece of trilobite fossil on my desk, which is a souvenir I got during the Science Festival excursion!”
The school also had recommended further readings to our children to develop their interests in science. Follwing the event, the pupils will make posters and books to introduce their thoughts on science to more people. The pupils also participated in an activity called Science Selfie; they took a photo of themselves as “little scientists”.
SCBS hopes to encourage our pupils to develop their interest in science through such activities. We look forward to their accomplishments towards the field of science in the future!
